Why Forcing Yourself Into Someone Else's Marketing Strategy Won't Work
We've all seen it—the next big coach telling us exactly what we must do to succeed online.
Sally the Social Media Sales Expert tells you that you MUST call your audience out on what they're doing wrong. And for the love of god, DO NOT create any "How To" carousels because those repel the action takers and are so 2022.
But hang on—what if I don't want to “call people out” the way Sally does? And yet, she's telling me that's the only way to call in success?
Well, I call BS.
The best marketing is what feels authentic and true to YOU—aligned with your natural personality and way of being.
Yes, I believe speaking directly to what your dream clients are going through and storytelling around that is key.
And yes, I also believe that clarity and punchiness in communication matter. But there are ways to do this that feel good in your system—that don't feel borrowed from someone else and forced.
And this is what a lot of coaches aren't supporting people with—finding their own unique way of marketing their beautiful business. Because when we try to communicate in ways that don't feel natural to us, we feel fake. And when we feel fake, it doesn't work. The energy is off, you feel resistance to sharing yourself online, and your audience can feel it, too.
You don't need to force yourself into a strategy that feels misaligned.
You don't need to follow every must-do marketing rule just because someone on the internet swears by it. When your marketing reflects the unique depth and value of your service, it naturally attracts the right people.
✔️ Your messaging should feel like you
✔️ Your content should support your energy, not deplete it
✔️ Your strategy should make marketing feel easier, not harder
Here are some simple ways to check in with yourself and the alignment of your marketing:
1. How does it feel in your body?
Your body is a great indicator of whether something is aligned or not. Do you feel excited, expansive, and clear about your marketing—or tense, drained, and resistant? If hitting “post” feels like a relief rather than something you're excited to share, that's a sign something's off.
2. Are you dreading certain types of content?
If creating trending Reels, time-consuming B-roll editing, or 15 slide carousels feels like pulling teeth, ask yourself—is this the best way for me to communicate? If you love speaking but hate writing, maybe speak-to-camera or Reel voiceovers are a better fit. If writing is your thing, focus on storytelling through captions and emails.
3. Are you marketing how you think you “should” rather than how you actually enjoy showing up?
Are you trying to fit into trends that don't resonate with you? Are you creating content because you want to or because someone told you it's the only way to grow? Your dream clients will connect with you—so find a way to market that actually feels natural.
4. Does it support your energy, or drain it?
Marketing shouldn't leave you feeling depleted. If your current strategy makes you feel like you have to be online constantly or forces you into posting at times that don't work for you, it might be time to shift things. You can create a flow that works with your natural energy rather than against it.
5. Are you seeing results—or just keeping busy?
Sometimes we stick with strategies that aren't working just because we think we should. But if you're spending hours creating content with little return, it's okay to step back and reassess what's actually moving the needle. More effort doesn't always mean better results.
